Spring Gardening in Missoula

It may feel like it is still winter out there, but it will be time to start planting before you know it!  Our Executive Housekeeper has an awesome green thumb and a very enviable garden each summer.  Here are a few of her growing tips to get you off to a good start this growing season.

Did you know some plants grow better when they’re planted near each other? Combinations worth trying out this year are carrots with peas, lettuce, or tomatoes, and try putting your cucumbers near your peas, beans, and radishes. Beans are easy as they do well near just about any vegetable in your garden - except for onions! Plant basil near your tomatoes to give them more flavor. (And they taste great together too!)

Planting bulbs this year? Buy bulbs that are plump and firm. The bigger they are the bigger they’ll bloom! Be sure to plant them pointed side up in an area that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight each day. Once your done planting, spread about an inch or two of mulch over the top of your garden. This will prevent the weeds from growing. (Who wants those pesky weeds in the garden away?!) Don’t have space for a garden? Bulbs grow just as well in pots!

Good luck from the Wingate Missoula — the best of Missoula hotels!
